The increasing use of web 2.0 and social networks has made it easier than ever to show support for non-profit organizations, social causes and victims of natural disasters. From signing online petitions or joining a cause to more symbolic gestures, such as changing one’s profile picture on social networks like Facebook or Twitter, the ways of spreading, amplifying, supporting and collaborating with non-profit entities are increasingly varied and original. This article intends to analyze the NGO Proactiva Open Arms’ use of Instagram during the 2015-2017 period. Specifically, it investigates what types of images and videos this NGO posted through a content analysis applied to a stratified random sample. Additionally, it examines the reactions generated by each post —in the form of likes and comments— in order to discern if there is any relationship between the type of image published and its popularity. The study concludes that Proactiva Open Arms has evolved remarkably in its use of Instagram, which is reflected in the increase in the frequency and regularity of its posts and the increased use of the types of images that generate more engagement among their followers.ca
