Introduction:
Developed countries face an increase in the age of the population due to a higher life
expectancy and a low mortality. In addition, there are older elders of very long ages in
which certain inevitable changes appear, the functional changes, which affect them
directly to the autonomy of the elderly.
Objective:
Explore the meaning of the experience of functional changes in old age.
Methodology:
Literature review of functional changes in old age (from September 2017 to February
2018), in Pubmed, Cuiden, Cinalh and Scielo. In addition, a mixed study which includes
a descriptive quantitative analysis of transcriptions of anonymous interviews made to 51
old people about the experience of these changes.
Results:
Of the 51 conducted interviews, 80% of the population suffered functional changes in
their old age, of which 24 were women and 17 men. The ages of greatest incidence in
these changes are 70-80 years. The main changes identified were: fatigue, loss of agility
and loss of autonomy. For the majority of the participants, the experience of these
functional changes has been positive without having an effect on the perception of old
age, the perception of health, the perceived quality of life and the autonomy for the
ADL.
Conclusions:
There is an increase in the number of elderly people population, with inevitable changes
in the aging process that can affect different areas of their lives. In our small study we
concluded that the elderly interviewees accepted the functional changes as mere
changes in aging without interfering in the activities of daily life, in the perception of
health, the quality of life and the perception of old age.
