Abstract
Aim: to determine the preference of children and parents for the different audiovisual distraction methods used in Paediatric Dentistry. Material and methods: descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in the Paediatric Dentistry Department of the University Dental Clinic of the International University of Catalonia. The sample was made up of those children between the ages of 5 and 9 attended in the Paediatric Dentistry service and who had received prior conservative dental treatment. A survey of 14 questions was conducted to assess the preference of using or not using a distraction method by parents and children, as well as the preference of children and parents over the different types of passive distraction methods: auditory (music and stories), audiovisual (cartoon films) and active distraction (video games). Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test to determine the relationships between the variables, taking as a statistically significant reference a p value ≤ 0.05 and a level of reliability of 95 %. Results: a total sample of 104 surveys was obtained, 57 male patients (54.8 %) and 47 female patients (45.2 %). The average age of the children was 7.14 ± 1.44 years. 67.3 % (n = 70) of the children in the study sample had had a positive experience in previous dental visits. Parents showed a greater preference for audiovisual distraction methods (45.2 %) and children had a greater preference for audiovisual distraction methods with a motor component (48 %), without finding statistically significant differences between both groups (p = 0.42).
