Abstract
Computational design methods have allowed architects to approach the design of complex geometric forms from new perspectives. This paper documents the use of evolutionary computational methods to reverse-engineer the roof of Félix Candela’s Our Lady of the Valley church in Spain, and reveal its ‘hidden’ paraboloid structure. It shows that parametric methods and genetic algorithms enable the successful analysis and exploration of hyperbolic paraboloids. Besides, through non-mathematical experimentation, it demonstrates these methods’ capacity to solve geometric problems found in incomplete historical materials or preexisting structures.
