Abstract
The access to the NiTi files in endodontics opened a new age in endodontics as a specialty in Dentistry, and the protocols for canal preparation have changed over the last decades. Dentists have had access to new NiTi files with high flexibility and resistance to cyclic fatigue, which allow them to sort the complexity of the different root canal anatomies while preserving as much as possible dentin and the natural structure of the tooth.
The disjunctive choice of reciprocating or rotatory instruments encourages the evaluation of the characteristics in the endodontics files, and the study of the changes produced in the anatomy and structure of the root canals during the cleaning and shaping procedures.
Micro-CT technology enables a more accurate and non-destructive three-dimensional analysis of the anatomical particularities and characteristics in the structure of the canal walls, before and after root canal instrumentation, thereby improving the study of the effect of endodontic files on the danger zones and pericervical dentin.
General dentists and specialists need to know the characteristics, performance, and implications of using the different NiTi rotary systems for the clinical conditions of root canals. Alloys, designs, and tapers have a considerable effect on the performance of the endodontic instruments. The knowledge obtained about danger zone (DZ) and the location of the smallest dentin thickness zones (SDTZ) will help to reduce the risk of cervical or middle 1/3 root and furcation perforations, as well as the excessive sound dentine removal in these areas, which can contribute to the prognosis and permanence of the tooth after root canal procedures.
Based on all that is mentioned above, it was considered relevant to study and compare accurately the shaping ability in the complete longitude of the root canals for WaveOne Gold (WG; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), Reciproc Blue (RB; VDW, Munich, Germany), TRUShape (TS, Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties), XP-endo Shaper (XP; FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), iRace (IR; FKG La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), and TruNatomy (TN; Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland); as well as evaluate the changes produced by these files more in detail on the smallest dentin thickness zones (SDTZ) on the mesial and distal walls and at the cervical and middle third of the root canals in these representative endodontics files.
