The admission to an ICU is perceived by the family as a stressful situation. This can cause that they experience negative emotions, generating a series of needs that must be identified by the health staff to improve the welfare of both, family and patient. Aim: Identify the needs of families with an adult member admitted to an intensive care unit. Methods: A review of the literature was performed in the following databases: CINAHL, Cochrane, Scielo, Google Scholar and Pubmed. Various filters and inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied for the search strategy. Finally, 29 scientific publications were selected to carry out the work. Results: The review of the literature shows that there are individual differences regarding the needs of families. Therefore, there is the need of an adequate evaluation by professionals to perform interventions adjusted to each family member. Families want to know all the information related to the patient's condition and they need to know that everything possible is being done to improve his welfare. If these needs are covered satisfactorily, they relieve anxiety and help them deal with this situation, enabling them to provide support and care to the patient. Conclusions: The needs identified as most important for families of critically ill patients are information, security and proximity and the least important are support and comfort. This shows that relatives prioritize the welfare of their loved ones before their own. We conclude that nurses are the most appropriate professionals to recognize these needs.en
