Abstract
This article aims to assess whether knowledge of languages (different from English and Catalan) influences the increase of the Spanish lexicon available. For this purpose, qualitative research has been developed, and an associative survey to compare the lexical availability of high school students in Madrid and Barcelona. The survey involved seven centers of interest, including some new ones such as Teachers and Education. A series of calculations were carried out to quantify if there are any differences between the groups. Apart from the index of lexical availability, the compatibility index and the Percentage of Retained Lexical Availability were used. The result is that the number of words in the intersection is low concerning the cardinal numbers in each group. It implies low compatibility. However, these words retain a high percentage of the total lexical availability. Thus, these words could be considered as the core lexicon. The main conclusion is that knowledge of other languages has a positive effect on the available Spanish lexicon. Moreover, it has been confirmed that the lexicon identified for both groups shows differences.
